CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the world's largest particle physics laboratories and it is situated in Geneva on the Franco-Swiss border. It is an intergovernmental organization with 20 Members States. Today more than 5000 physicists from research institutes worldwide make use of CERN installations for their experiments.
The transformers are integral part of the power converters used to feed the main dipole and quadrupole magnets of the Super Proton Synchrotron machine (or SPS).
The SPS is an particles accelerator operating with heavy ions. It is housed in a circular tunnel located 60 underground, whose circumference is about 7 km, straddling the border of France and Switzerland.
The SPS is now used as the final injector for high-intensity proton beams for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), accelerating protons from 26 GeV to 450 GeV. The LHC itself then accelerates them to several teraelectronvolts (TeV).
PECULIARITY OF TMC TRANSFORMERS SUPPLIED FOR THIS PROJECT
Due to the ageing (26 years old) of the existing oil immersed transformers, they will be replaced by the TMC cast resin transformers with High voltage and Low voltage terminals fully compatible.
Four transformers shall be used for the feeding of the thyristor bridges 30° phase shifted. This phase shift is achieved using two identical transformers with extended delta on the primary side (Dy11.5) and with R and S phase swapping.
The transformers are rated for pulsed mode operation and able to operate in the worst possible conditions. The transformers are naturally air cooled and housed in pairs in a outdoor IP 32 enclosure directly exposed to the sun.
This project is a milestone which embodies the excellent expertise and technical skills of TMC Italia Spa, a company which is always ready to face tough challenges.
TMC Italia Spa will be closed from 25th to 26th April 2013 for National Holiday.
